Water Damage Repair in Winnipeg — Phone, Tablet, Laptop, MacBook
Data recovery first. Honest diagnostics. No miracle pricing. Walk-ins welcome at St. Vital and Thompson — every hour increases corrosion, so bring it in fast.
Mobile Tech Lab assesses liquid-damaged phones, tablets, laptops, and MacBooks at our St. Vital (Winnipeg) and Thompson locations. The $49 diagnostic identifies the damage scope. Repair attempts from $149+, data recovery attempts from $129+ — both fees applied toward the final repair if you proceed. Outcomes can't be guaranteed for liquid damage — corrosion is unpredictable and damage often surfaces days or weeks after a "successful" repair. NO warranty applies to liquid-damaged device repairs, on any component, regardless of whether future failure relates to our work. This is industry-standard for liquid damage, not specific to us. Time matters. Every hour increases corrosion. Bring your device in as soon as possible.

What to do right now (before bringing it in)
These steps in the first 30 minutes significantly improve outcomes.
- Power off immediately. Do not power on or charge the device — even to "test if it works." Liquid + electricity causes immediate short circuits that turn fixable damage into unfixable damage.
- Don't try to dry it with heat. No hairdryers, ovens, radiators, or sunlight. Heat warps internal components and pushes liquid further into the board. Just leave it powered off.
- Don't shake or bang it. This spreads liquid through the device and can damage components that weren't affected by the initial spill.
- Bring it in as soon as possible. Every hour increases corrosion damage. Walk-ins welcome at both St. Vital and Thompson during business hours.
Bring it in immediately if: the device was exposed within the last 24 hours (best chances), the device won't power on, important data hasn't been backed up, you see liquid behind the screen or in the charging port, or the device powers on but behaves erratically (random touches, audio cutting out, flickering).
Don't do these things (liquid-damage myths)
These myths circulate online but actually make damage worse. Skip them all.
Don't put it in rice. Most common myth, least useful. Rice doesn't pull liquid out of phones effectively, and rice dust can get inside ports and cause additional damage. By the time you discover it didn't work, hours of corrosion damage have already occurred.
Don't put it in a freezer. Freezing doesn't help liquid evaporate — and it introduces condensation when you take the device back out. More liquid inside, not less.
Don't shake it dry. Shaking spreads liquid to components that weren't affected by the original spill. A localized issue becomes a board-wide one.
Don't keep using it. Every minute a liquid-damaged device is powered on, electricity is flowing through wet circuits causing irreversible corrosion. Power it off the moment you see liquid contact.
Data recovery — even from devices that won't turn on
In most liquid damage cases, recovering photos, messages, and files is the priority.
Check your cloud backups first. Before paying for any data recovery service, sign into your iCloud account (iPhone / iPad / Mac), Google account (Android), or Microsoft account (Windows). Most modern devices back up automatically — you may have everything important already.
When cloud backups aren't enough — our $129 process:
1. Diagnostic ($49). We open the device and assess board damage. This fee is credited toward the data recovery attempt if you proceed — or toward a purchase, if you'd rather put it there. 2. Component installation. We install temporary working components (battery, screen, charging port) to try to power the device on long enough to extract data. 3. Board-level recovery (when needed). For more severe cases we attempt board-level recovery techniques. We do basic board-level work in-house. Advanced cases that need specialty micro-soldering services we tell you upfront — sometimes a specialty referral is the better fit. 4. Honest outcome. Outcomes are never guaranteed. Some devices simply can't be recovered — we tell you upfront if yours is a long shot before you commit.
Our $129 fee covers the recovery attempt regardless of outcome, with the $49 diagnostic credited toward it (or toward a purchase, if you'd rather). We tell you upfront whether your case is a candidate for our in-house recovery or whether a specialty service is the better fit.
Devices we accept for liquid damage assessment
Phones (iPhone & Android) — iPhone (all models from iPhone 4 to iPhone 17 Pro Max), Samsung Galaxy (S, A, Note, Z Fold, Z Flip series), Google Pixel, plus most other Android brands. Foldables welcome — we have the tooling.
Tablets (iPad & Android) — iPad (all generations including iPad Pro), Samsung Galaxy Tab (all series), Microsoft Surface, plus most other Android tablets.
Laptops (MacBooks & PCs) — MacBook Air, MacBook Pro (all years and chips including M-series), plus Windows laptops from all major manufacturers (Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, Microsoft Surface).
Game consoles — Nintendo Switch (all variants including OLED), Steam Deck, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S. Less common than phone/laptop liquid damage but we handle these too.
What we don't accept: wearables (Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch, fitness trackers, smart rings). These typically aren't repairable for liquid damage and we don't have the specialized tooling.
When we recommend replacement instead
If damage is severe or data is no longer needed, we may recommend replacing the device instead. We tell you upfront — before charging anything beyond the $49 diagnostic fee.
Replacement is usually the smarter choice when:
- The board is severely corroded across multiple sections
- The cost of repair approaches or exceeds the device's current trade-in value
- You don't need data recovery and the phone is older than 3 years
- Specialty services would be a better fit for your specific recovery case
In some cases, store credit toward another device may be an option. If recovery or repair isn't practical, we'll explain replacement options — or buy your device for parts toward your next one.
The honest truth about liquid damage outcomes
Why we don't promise things no honest shop can promise.
In some cases, replacing a specific component restores function. However, liquid-damaged devices cannot be reliably warrantied against future issues. Corrosion damage continues to develop weeks after the spill — even after a successful initial repair. Future failures are common.
For this reason:
- NO warranty applies to liquid-damaged repairs, on any component, regardless of whether future failure relates to our work
- We always explain risks before proceeding
- We don't charge for repairs we can't reasonably attempt — if your device is beyond reasonable repair, we say so before billing beyond the diagnostic fee
Most repair shops won't tell you any of this. They'll quote you a confident price, attempt the repair, hand it back working, and hope it lasts past their warranty period. We'd rather have a harder upfront conversation than a betrayed customer four weeks later.
Frequently asked questions
Is water damage repair guaranteed?
No — and any shop that tells you otherwise is lying. Corrosion damage from liquid is unpredictable and continues to develop for weeks after the spill, even after a successful initial repair. We diagnose, attempt recovery, and explain realistic odds — but we don't warranty liquid-damaged repairs. Industry standard.
Can you recover data even if the phone won't turn on?
Often yes. We install temporary working components (battery, screen, charging port) to try to power the device on long enough to extract photos / messages / contacts. For more severe cases we attempt board-level recovery in-house. Some devices simply can't be recovered — we don't charge if we can't extract any data.
Should I check my iCloud or Google backup before paying for recovery?
Yes — please do this first. Sign into your iCloud / Google / Microsoft account from another device. Most modern phones back up photos and contacts automatically. You may already have everything important. We'd rather you save the $129 if you don't need to spend it.
What does liquid damage repair cost?
$49 diagnostic identifies damage scope (credited toward the final repair, or toward a purchase if you'd rather). $129+ data recovery attempt. $149+ liquid damage cleaning + repair attempt (varies by extent and components needed). Replacement parts quoted separately during assessment. No surprises — we explain every fee before any work begins.
Why don't you warranty liquid damage repairs?
Because liquid damage is genuinely unpredictable. Corrosion continues developing for weeks after the spill, often surfacing as new failures after an apparently successful repair. Warrantying that would be dishonest. This is industry standard — every reputable liquid-damage repair shop has the same policy. The shops that claim warranty coverage are either inflating their prices to cover the warranty risk or hoping the customer doesn't come back.
Is the liquid damage diagnostic fee refundable?
The $49 diagnostic fee is non-refundable — it covers the technician time to open the device and assess board damage. If you proceed with repair or recovery, it's credited toward the final cost (so you don't pay it twice) — or toward a purchase, if you'd rather put it there. If you decline, you walk away having paid only the $49.
Should I try to dry my phone at home first?
No — and especially don't use rice, a hairdryer, the oven, sunlight, or the freezer. All of these make damage worse. The best home action is to power it off immediately and bring it in as soon as possible. Every hour increases corrosion.
Can you fix laptop and MacBook liquid damage?
Yes — MacBook Air, MacBook Pro (all years and chips including M-series), plus Windows laptops from Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, Microsoft Surface. Same diagnostic + recovery + repair process. Laptop liquid damage often requires keyboard / trackpad / logic-board cleaning. Quote depends on assessment.
Can you save my photos / contacts / files even if the phone was in water for a long time?
Sometimes. Long-duration submersion (overnight or longer) significantly reduces success odds — corrosion damage is more advanced. We'll give you an honest assessment after the $49 diagnostic. We don't charge for recovery we can't complete.
How long does liquid damage assessment take?
Same-day assessment for most walk-ins at St. Vital and Thompson when the queue allows. The full repair or recovery cycle depends on how the diagnostic reads — minor cases are sometimes done same-day, more severe cases take 2–5 business days for component sourcing + cleaning.
Do I need an appointment for liquid damage assessment?
Walk-ins welcome at both St. Vital (Winnipeg) and Thompson during business hours. With liquid damage every hour matters — don't wait for an appointment if you can come in right away. If you can't reach us in person, request a quote online and we'll arrange a mail-in.
When should I just replace my phone instead of fixing it?
When the board is severely corroded across multiple sections, when the repair cost approaches the device's replacement value, when you don't need data recovery and the device is more than 3 years old, or when a specialty data-recovery service is the better fit. We'll tell you upfront — before charging anything beyond the $49 diagnostic.
Why do most shops claim they can fix any water damage but you don't?
Because they want the repair revenue. We'd rather have a harder upfront conversation than a betrayed customer four weeks later when corrosion finally surfaces. Liquid damage outcomes are genuinely uncertain — any shop that tells you otherwise is either inflating prices to cover the warranty risk, or counting on you not coming back when something fails.
