Why Is My Phone Not Charging? 9 Common Causes and Fixes
A short troubleshooting walkthrough before you spend a cent on repair.
Before you book a repair, walk through these nine causes — about half of "not charging" cases are fixed in under five minutes with no parts.

Common causes
1. Lint in the charging port
A flashlight and a wooden toothpick (not metal) clears 9 out of 10 ports. The contacts have to touch the cable's contacts — even a small amount of pocket lint will block them.
2. A failing cable or brick
Swap both the cable AND the brick with known-good ones. Cables fail far more often than people expect; MFi-certified cables last longer than generic ones.
3. A power-source issue
Try a wall outlet. Laptop USB, power strips, and power banks all deliver less current than wall power and sometimes deliver none at all.
4. Cold battery
Below about 0 °C, lithium batteries stop accepting a charge to protect themselves. Warm the phone up to room temperature and try again.
5. Software freeze
A hard restart clears transient software issues. On iPhone: Vol Up, Vol Down, hold Side. On most Androids: hold Power + Vol Down for 15 seconds.
6. A worn-out battery
After ~500 charge cycles a battery holds less and takes longer to top up. Check Settings → Battery → Health (iOS) or a battery app (Android). Below 80% health, a new battery is usually worth it.
7. Damaged charging port pins
If the cable only works at a specific angle, the port pins are bent or worn. This is a port replacement — typically $79–$89 for most phones.
8. Liquid damage corrosion
Moisture corrodes the internal charging circuit over weeks. If your phone has been near water (even rain or sweat) within the past month, see a technician before more corrosion spreads.
9. A motherboard fault
Rare but real — the power IC (called the 'Tristar' on iPhones) can fail. This requires board-level micro-soldering. Still usually $200 or less, well below a new phone.
The "30-second test" — diagnose before you spend
Before you head to a repair shop, run this 30-second test:
- Shine a flashlight into the charging port. See lint? Toothpick it out (wooden, not metal). Test again.
- Try a different cable. Borrow one from a coworker, friend, or your car if needed.
- Try a different brick. A wall outlet, not a laptop USB.
- Hard restart the phone (iPhone: Vol Up → Vol Down → hold Side until logo. Android: Power + Vol Down for 15s).
- Wait 10 minutes plugged in before declaring it dead — completely dead batteries take time to "wake up" before showing the charge icon.
About half of "won't charge" cases at our counter are fixed by one of these five steps. The other half need a port replacement, battery, or board-level repair.
When to stop troubleshooting and bring it in
Some symptoms point clearly at a repair (not a DIY fix):
- Cable only works at a specific angle → port pins are bent. Port replacement, $79–$99.
- "Moisture detected" warning → liquid corrosion on the port. Bring it in same week before damage spreads.
- Phone is hot during charging even when idle → charging IC degrading. Board-level diagnostic.
- Battery percentage drops faster than it charges → battery health below 80%. Battery replacement $69–$149 depending on phone.

My phone charges sometimes but not always — port or cable?

Will cleaning my own port damage it?
Only if you use the wrong tool. Wooden toothpicks are safe; metal pins / paperclips / SIM tools can short the contacts and cause permanent board damage. Compressed air can push lint deeper. Stick to wood.
My phone says "Liquid detected" — is the port damaged?
Maybe. The warning fires when moisture bridges the contacts. If your phone has been near water (rain, sweat, even high humidity), corrosion may be starting on the port pins or board. Don't ignore the warning — damage spreads over weeks. Bring it in for a port inspection.
